After Wang’s lawyers forced WonderWork into bankruptcy, they followed us into bankruptcy court and attempted to force us out of business which was always their ultimate goal. They told the judge that I had to be removed and they made all kinds of vicious and false allegations against me. When the judge grew concerned about their accusations, she appointed an “examiner” and his law firm to conduct an “investigation” of WonderWork and me.
The examiner and his law firm were supposed to be “neutral fact-finders.” Before being hired, the Court asked the Examiner and his law firm if either of them had any connection or conflict with Charles Wang. He and his firm both said no. They did not answer truthfully. Charles Wang was one of the examiner’s law firm’s largest clients. In fact, while this was happening, the examiner’s law firm was busy selling one of Wang’s companies for $250 million. Denying any relationship with Charles Wang was the first of many lies told by the examiner and his law firm.
The Judge gave the examiner and his law firm a budget of $100,000 – $300,000. Final invoices submitted by the examiner and his law firm came close to $3 million. For a few months work. Like all the other phony investigations orchestrated by Wang’s lawyers, this one was biased, one-sided and unfair. There was no due process. And we had no opportunity to answer allegations or refute false charges. Under severe pressure from the judge, we hired an auditor that promised to have our audit done by May 15th. But it wasn’t done in May, or June or July or August or September. We didn’t know it at the time but the examiner – without our knowledge or permission – ordered our auditors not to complete our audit. Ever.
The judge was furious our audit was taking so long, and we kept working hard to complete it. But we had no idea that the examiner was why our auditors wouldn’t complete it. His duplicity kept us stuck in bankruptcy court for months and months while he ran up his fees to ten times more than the budget he had been given. To make matters worse, the examiner and his law firm, who worked for Wang, were collaborating with the lawyers who forced us into bankruptcy — another law firm that also worked for Wang. Here were two of the largest and most expensive law firms in the United States, that both worked for Wang, joining forces to destroy a tiny, 8-person charity.
After stretching out a 1-2 month “examination” to six months, and massively overspending the budget the judge had given him, the examiner submitted a final report which annihilated us.It was filled with hundreds of false statements, allegations, and charges.
You will find a fact-checked version of his report below. This report forced WonderWork to close its doors.A few months later when it was revealed that the examiner and his law firm failed to disclose that their major conflict with Charles Wang, and perpetrated a fraud on the court, the judge called them in to explain how this happened. They had no explanation. The examiner said it was an “oversight.” The judge shrugged and said it was too late to do anything about this fraud on the court.
